Last week, we introduced you to the hottest new 1980 colors. Now let’s dial the temperature back in the other direction; meet Cool Violet, the purple that demands attention. We developed Cool Violet to bridge a significant gap in the blue-violet spectrum of color space. When you look at single-pigment violets—Cobalt, Ultramarine, Manganese, and Dioxazine—they’re all relatively close in color space. Manganese is the warmest and most red-leaning of the lot, and among the weakest in tint strength. If we want a cooler, blue-leaning violet we’ve got Dioxazine which carries the highest tinting strengths and doesn’t veer far from true, central violet. For our Cool Violet, we pushed Dioxazine Purple into blue-violet territory, moderated its overpowering strength, and gave it more opacity with the addition of Ultramarine Blue. Then we lightened the color and brought out the blue-violet with Titanium White, filling a huge gap in the violets available to artists. We just released 24 new colors, including Cool Violet. New year. New color. We’re excited to introduce 13 new Artist Grade Oil Colors and 11 new 1980 Oil Colors! Everything truly great we’ve ever done has come from listening. These colors are a product of that. Behind each one is years of insights from artists, our own studio practices, and our relentless dedication to getting it right. We have an arsenal of pigments and historical knowledge to work with and color making is our life’s work. We began this chapter in color development several years ago, and we are nowhere near finished. Oiling-out is an excellent technique to restore the vibrancy in oil paintings, especially those with strong black pigments that have dulled after drying. This technique demonstrated here by @anniedrewwildlifeart re-saturates the color depth. This can be helpful when deciding if the painting is ready to be varnished or if there’s more painting to be done. Annie’s preferred mixture for this is a 50/50 ratio of Galkyd + Gamsol. While many artists have their own go-to mixtures, our newest medium, Gamblin 3-in-1, is essentially the same mix.
