Gamblin Artists Colors
The People Behind the Paint

We are a lean, green urban shop powered by wind and a die-hard dedication to oil painters.

Gamblin's oil painting materials are handcrafted from raw materials of the finest quality by a production team of the finest quality: a small but mighty crew of master paintmakers, artists, musicians, bicyclers, reclaimed clothing designers, snowboarders, ball players, and rain worshippers.

Committed to sustainability, we reduce, reuse, and recycle wherever possible. Excess pigments are collected every spring from our Torit® Air Filtration system and turned into Torrit Grey—a special color we give to painters in celebration of Earth Day. As founder Robert Gamblin explains, "Pigment dust should not go into the earth, water or landfill, but into paint."

Typical Gamblin mode of transportation? Matt's vintage 1956 Schwinn Black Phantom. Rather than driving to and from our downtown factory, we cover nearly 25,000 miles each year by pedaling, walking, or riding public transportation. On any given day, more of us get here by bike than by car. In fact, our employee "parking lot" is a small area over our production floor that shelters our bicycles from the Portland rain.

We stand behind the products we make, and we're unusually dedicated to the painters who use them. And though we're greater than the sum of our beliefs, we would nonetheless like to share them with you:

— We believe, in this day and age, there's no reason to use painting materials containing turpentine or lead, which is why none of ours do.

— We believe every painting deserves to stand the test of time, which is why our materials make permanent paintings. For us, permanence is measured in centuries, and five is a good starting point.

— We believe the potential of our materials is realized in an artist's hands. It's our duty, therefore, to share our knowledge and ideas: technical and historical information, techniques, suggestions for Studio Safety, and more. We share this information broadly - through our website, newsletters, and events, for example - and through individual consultations with hundreds of painters each year.

— We believe buying a tube of our paint is the beginning of our collaboration. Please call or email us anytime, with any questions or comments.
